Over de wijnmaker
L’Absurde Génie des Fleurs is het wijnmaakproject van Miha Trifa en Tom Gauthier, twee jonge, gepassioneerde wijnmakers die samen sinds 2016 vanuit verschillende gehuurde garages in Bédarieux verscheidene (micro-)cuvées vinifiëren. In Bédarieux, in het westelijke, landinwaartse deel van de Hérault, werkten de twee voorheen als négociants, totdat ze in 2019 5,5 hectare overnamen, en sindsdien louter wijn maken van druiven uit gaarden die ze zelf onderhouden.

Miha, Roemeense van origine, werkte voordat ze Tom ontmoette in Parijs als vertaalster in de wereld van de psychotherapie en -analyse, en ontdekte natuurlijke wijnen in de late jaren ‘00 in bars in Parijs. Tom, geboren en getogen in Nântes, kwam ook net als Miha relatief vroeg in aanraking met natuurlijke wijnen in bars, en werkte zelf een lange tijd in natuurlijke wijnbar Le Jéroboam, in Nântes. Natuurlijke wijnmakers uit Anjou als Sébastien Dervieux (Babass) en Jerome Saurigny werden al snel grote favorieten van Tom. Miha en Tom kwamen elkaar tegen bij een bevriende natuurlijke wijnmaker in Corbières in 2014, waarna ze verliefd werden, en ze uiteindelijk samen besloten op zoek te gaan naar een plek om wijn te maken. Ondanks dat Tom groot fan was van de radicale boeren uit Anjou vonden ze beiden dat de focus in Anjou, of eigenlijk de Loire-vallei, te veel op monocultuur lag. Uiteindelijk kwamen ze in de Hérault uit, waar de grond niet te duur was, en waar de natuurlijke omgeving relatief divers was. In 2016 begonnen ze het négoce-project in de bosrijke Hérault, en konden ze een micro-perceeltje op een plateau net boven de rivier de Orb aanschaffen. In de vroege négoce-jaren kocht het duo druiven bij van onder andere François Aubry, Remi Poujol en Julien Peyras, en maakte ze wijn in gehuurde garages in Bédarieux.

Over de wijngaard
Sinds 2019 zijn Miha en Tom uit elkaar, maar besloten wel in de wijn samen verder te gaan. Dit werd beklonken met de overname van 5,5 hectare aan verschillende druivenrassen als Cinsault, Aramon, Carignan, Grand Noir de la Calmette, Morastel, Mourvèdre, Terret, en Chardonnay in Clairac. Een bekende buurman in dit deel van de Languedoc is pionier Axel Prüfer, die de twee ook, als officieuze mentor, met veel plezier van kennis en hulp voorziet. De ‘kelder’ van het duo ziet er van buiten uit als een garage, maar is van binnen wel als kelder-zijnde ingericht. De grootte van de kelder staat in groot contrast met de mega-wijnbedrijven waar de Languedoc bekend om staat, en maakt duidelijk dat ze samen met veel aandacht kleine oplages willen maken, en niet simpelweg voor volume produceren.

Over de wijnen
Tegenwoordig maken Miha en Tom een divers spectrum aan energieke wijnen van deze druiven, die allen worden gebotteld in doorzichtige flessen en onder een kroonkurk, en vaker dan niet interessante maar ook ietwat lief-klinkende Roemeense namen dragen als ‘Nor’, ‘Ploume’ en ‘Raza’. Stilistisch gezien vallen er paralellen te trekken tussen de wijnen van L’Absurde Génie des Fleurs en van de mystieke Auvergne-producenten Pierre Beauger en, later, Aurélien Lefort, die ook met ‘schattige’ labels de wijnen in kleine oplagen bottelen in doorzichtige flessen onder kroonkurken.
In de breedte zijn de wijnen van Miha en Tom gemaakt om te drinken, en hebben vaak alcoholpercentages rond de 11%. Ook zijn de oplages van de cuvées die Miha en Tom maken allemaal relatief klein, onder andere wegens het gebruik van een kleine verticale pers en kleine RVS en fiberglass cuves, die ieder als aparte cuvée worden gebotteld. De oplages van deze cuvées komen dan ook vaak niet boven de 1.000 flessen uit.

About the winemaker
L’Absurde Génie des Fleurs is the winemaking project of Miha Trifa and Tom Gauthier, two young, passionate artisan winemakers who have, since 2016, been crafting a range of (micro-)cuvées from a series of rented garages in Bédarieux. Situated in the western, inland reaches of the Hérault, the duo previously worked as négociants, until 2019, when they took over 5.5 hectares of their own land marking the transition to working exclusively with grapes from vineyards they personally tend.

Miha, originally from Romania, worked as a translator in the field of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Paris before meeting Tom, and discovered the world of natural wine in late-2000s Parisian bars. Tom, born and raised in Nantes, also encountered natural wine relatively early in life and worked for a long period at the natural wine bar Le Jéroboam in Nantes. He became an ardent admirer of natural wine producers from Anjou, such as Sébastien Dervieux (Babass) and Jerome Saurigny. Miha and Tom first crossed paths at a friend’s natural winery in Corbières in 2014, sparking a romance that soon led them to seek a place to bring their shared winemaking vision to life. Although Tom was inspired by the radical low-intervention producers of Anjou, they both found the Loire’s focus on monoculture limiting. Ultimately, they settled in the Hérault, drawn by affordable land and a remarkably diverse natural environment. In 2016, they launched their négoce project amidst the forests of the Hérault, managing to acquire a small parcel atop a plateau just above the river Orb. During these early years, they sourced grapes from like-minded growers François Aubry, Remi Poujol, and Julien Peyras among them while making their wines in rented Bédarieux garages.

About the vineyard
Since 2019, although Miha and Tom have separated as a couple, they've chosen to keep growing together as partners in wine. Their ongoing collaboration was cemented with the acquisition of 5.5 hectares planted to a mix of grape varieties: Cinsault, Aramon, Carignan, Grand Noir de la Calmette, Morastel, Mourvèdre, Terret, and Chardonnay in Clairac. Not far off is pioneering European natural wine producer Axel Prüfer, who, as an informal mentor and neighbor, generously shares his experience with the pair. The winery itself still looks like a garage from the outside but has been converted inside to function fully as a proper cellar. Its modest scale stands in stark contrast to the massive wine businesses the Languedoc is known for a clear signal that Miha and Tom are dedicated to crafting small-batch, biodynamic wines with care and attention rather than focusing on sheer volume.

About the wines
Today, Miha and Tom create an ever-changing array of energetic natural wines from their organically farmed grapes, bottled in clear glass and sealed with crown caps often bearing whimsical, affectionate Romanian names such as ‘Nor’, ‘Ploume’, and ‘Raza’. Stylistically, their work invites comparisons with the enigmatic low-intervention producers of Auvergne, like Pierre Beauger and, later, Aurélien Lefort, who also bottle their small-lot wines with distinctive, playful labels in clear bottles sealed under crown caps.

Across the range, the wines are designed for easy, joyful drinking, typically boasting moderate alcohol levels around 11%. All production is decidedly small-scale: the artisan winemakers deliberately keep cuvée volumes limited by using a small vertical press and compact stainless steel and fiberglass fermenters, each vessel resulting in its own unique bottling. As a result, most of their cuvées see releases limited to under 1,000 bottles making each expression a rare glimpse into the unique world of this sustainable, family-run vineyard in the Hérault.
