Over de wijnmaker
Shota Iashagashvili begon Juniors Marani samen met zijn twee beste vrienden in 2015, tegelijkertijd met Tamuna (Tamuna’s Wine, Kortavebis Marani) en Ketevan (Gogo Wines). Omdat de drie tegelijkertijd met Tamuna en Ketevan in het oosten van Georgië begonnen met wijnmaken en daarmee een nieuwe generatie (natuurlijke) wijnmakers in het oosten van Georgië inluidden, noemden ze zichzelf de ‘Juniors’, vandaar de naam ‘Juniors Marani’.

In de beginjaren was Ketevan’s vader Kakha de mentor van het vijftal. Kakha, groot pionier met betrekking tot natuurlijk wijn-maken in Georgië, nam de drie heren en twee dames onder zijn vleugel, en samen met Kakha hielpen en overlegden de vijf elkaar veel. De wijngaarden van Juniors Marani lagen net als de gaarden van Kakha en Ketevan in Artana, noord-oost Kakheti, ook niet ver van de gaarden van Tamuna in Gremi vandaan.

Toen één van de drie vrienden van Juniors Marani door een zeer tragisch ongeval om het leven kwam, besloten de Shota en zijn andere vriend te stoppen met het wijn-maken, en de marani op te heffen. Het verdriet was te groot, en de verbintenis met Artana te traumatisch. Kort na het voorval verhuisde de vriend van Shota naar het buitenland, om een ander carrièrepad te bewandelen, en verhuisde Shota zelf naar een dorp in de bergen dicht bij Tbilisi.

Over de wijngaard
Vanaf vintage 2020 heeft Shota Juniors Marani in zijn eentje opnieuw leven in geblazen, ook als eerbetoon naar zijn overleden vriend. Shota vond wijngaarden met prachtige Rkatsiteli een stuk ten zuiden van Artana, op de vlaktes van Kakheti.

Over de wijnen
In jaargang 2020 en jaargang 2021 maakte Shota, met gaard- en oogsthulp van zijn broers, één cuvée Rkatsiteli, op de Kakhetiaanse manier. Simpelweg hele clusters voor zes maanden op de schillen, zonder toevoegingen, zonder klaring en zonder filtratie, in de qvevri ingegraven in de achtertuin van het huis waar hij woont met zijn broers. Prachtige, krachtige Rkatsiteli, zoals het hoort.

(Voor diegene die van plan zijn Shota en familie te bezoeken; vergeet niet te vragen of er eventueel de khachapuri van Shota’s moeder gaat worden geserveerd… Volgens ingewijden de beste van oost-Georgië… in combinatie met de chacha van +-80% van de familie wil je nooit meer weg bij Shota!)

About the winemaker
Shota Iashagashvili founded Juniors Marani together with his two closest friends in 2015, at the same time as Tamuna (Tamuna’s Wine, Kortavebis Marani) and Ketevan (Gogo Wines). As all three began making wine in eastern Georgia simultaneously, they saw themselves as heralding a new generation of (natural) winemakers in the region. Inspired by this fresh start, they called themselves the ‘Juniors’ hence the name ‘Juniors Marani’.

In those early years, the trio was guided by Ketevan’s father, Kakha, a real pioneer of natural wine in Georgia. Kakha took the three men and two women under his wing, mentoring and working closely with them. Their vineyards, like those of Kakha and Ketevan, were located in Artana, northeast Kakheti, not far from Tamuna’s vines in Gremi. Together, the five formed a tight-knit community of young, low-intervention producers, learning from and supporting one another at the heart of Georgia’s artisan winemaking revival.

Tragedy struck when one of Shota’s two friends died unexpectedly in a terrible accident. The grief and the memories tied to Artana became overwhelming, leading Shota and his remaining friend to halt all winemaking and close the marani. Shota’s friend soon moved abroad to start a new life, while Shota himself relocated to a mountain village near Tbilisi, setting out on a new chapter as well.

About the vineyard
Since the 2020 vintage, Shota has revived Juniors Marani by himself, as a tribute to his late friend. He discovered new vineyards with beautiful Rkatsiteli grapes to the south of Artana, on the plains of Kakheti. These organic vineyards continue the tradition of sustainable viticulture and low-intervention winemaking that defined the Juniors’ beginnings.

About the wines
In the 2020 and 2021 vintages, Shota helped in the vineyard and during harvest by his brothers crafted a single cuvée of Rkatsiteli in the traditional Kakhetian style. Whole clusters ferment on the skins for six months, without any additives, fining, or filtration, in qvevri buried in the backyard of the house where he lives with his brothers. The result is a remarkable, powerful Rkatsiteli: pure, honest, and exactly as it should be.

(If you plan to visit Shota and his family, don’t forget to ask if his mother’s khachapuri might be served according to insiders, it’s the very best in eastern Georgia. And if you get to taste the family’s homemade chacha, pushing 80%, you might never want to leave Shota’s table!)
