We were in (rainy! = good!) Spain two weeks ago, and travelled from Catalunya to the central regions of Gredos and Castilla-La Mancha. Here is a small slideshow of the analogs we took.

We visited Xavi and Andreù of La Rural, who were not only busy pruning but also were at the end of the calçots-harvest, whilst in Guardiola de Font-Rubí, we met with Matthijs of La Forastera with whom we tasted his full-range of delicious orange wines. In the northern realms of Catalunya, we saw the new plantings of Fruita Analógica’s ‘Fruita Park’ with Dido and Jur in Rabós, before drinking their Brutal Orange from 90-year-old vines with turbot. With Núria and Manel of Clos Lentiscus, we had a (wet) tour of their beautiful estate, including a visit to their own bees of which the honey is used for secondary refermentation of bubbles.

After Catalunya, we drove to the high-altitude Gredos to meet with Fabio of Vinos Ambiz and to see his walled-garden-like century old vines and tasting beautiful rancios aged in the sun. We did a quick pitstop across the hill from Fabio to see the vines of our dear friends Vicky & Nahuel of Pequeños y Salvajes, after which we drove to Castilla-La Mancha, for an awe-inspiring visit with Julian and his son Bruno of Esencia Rural. There, we spoke about the difficult (radically natural) winemaking circumstances of the region, industrial production and the on-purpose oxidative aging of their wines. We even tasted wine directly from a 50-year-old tinaja buried in the vineyard…

It’s spring, which can only mean one thing: the fresh wines of the ever-serene and always-smiling Franz Strohmeier have arrived! Last year’s vintage flew off the shelves, but we’re now restocked with the new vintage, as well as two new cuvées and a longer-aged version of one of our faves…

We received the new vintage of TLZ Weiss 2022, a blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, now quite soft and Burgundian, alongside its bigger sibling, Lysegrøn 2021, which shines with a similar texture but a tad more salty minerality. On the red side, there’s the new TLZ Rot 2020, bursting with bright, peppery energy that reminds us of Pineau d’Aunis by JP Robinot. In addition, Franz sent us an aged version of our favorite cuvée, Indigo. The extra maturation has given the 2017 (!) a deep spiciness, fine tannins, and endless minerality.

Also back in stock: the ever-festive Schiller Frizzante and the vibrant pink Lys-rød, both unmistakably Strohmeier with rhubarb- and wild strawberry-fruits. Lastly, Franz has released two new cuvées: a crisp Blanc de Blancs pét-nat and a beast of a wine named The Spiral 2014—a 100% Blauer Wildbacher brut nature that spent nine years aging on the lees. Definitely a wine that can spiral one into another dimension…

Last September, we visited Lori Haon of Domaine du Petit Oratoire in the small hamlet of Valliguières, in the forrest just west of Tavel. Lori makes lively natural wines with perhaps the best price-quality ratios in the Gard, and we are excited that the wines we tasted at the domaine are finally here and ready for action!

From his 20+ hectares of biodynamically certified vineyards, Lori makes a wide array of soft and light red wines, from the very affordable and stunning low-alcohol Copains 2023 of predominately Cinsault and Grenache, to the new cuvée named Hors Serie, of own plantings of Riesling and Pinot Noir from massale selection, to the serious but digestible cuvées Suzette and Flaux, both made with multiple cépages from 100-year old vines, showcasing what the (natural!) southern Rhône is all about. Most of his reds can be compared to the dark rosés of Tavel, but are not as bloated or blown up as the wines from the neighboring appellation. We have tiny quantities of Lori’s own terroir-driven Tavel in stock too…

Besides the reds (some of which are available on bag-in-box and KeyKeg), Lori makes some whites in much smaller quantities. In 2023, he made only a small tank of his generous white Rhône blend Gratte Conil, because of devastating losses, but even though the quantities are tiny, this white has it all. In addition, we have a few cases of his Gratte Conil Hors d’Age, which is a blend of his Gratte Conil in barrels from 2016-2019, aged for 36 months. Serious stuff!

Quick Alsatian transmission: the 2023 vintage of L

Quick Alsatian transmission: the 2023 vintage of Léo Dirringer’s Pur Jus has landed! We tasted his new vintage at the Les Anonymes-fair early February, and now have the sapid blend of Riesling, Auxerrois and Sylvaner in stock again. Great and fairly priced as always, ready to go!

In addition, we received an extra transport of Léo’s orange Virose 2023, full of tropical Gewürz-aromas, great minerality and acidity, whilst never too perfume-y or heady. Also, after some rest, the light-red Terre À Boire of Pinot Noir is ready for the terrace season.

Not pictured but tasted in February and in stock too are the gastronomic Grand Cru Frankstein (!) and the solera-system Granit’iK, which both are immaculate terroir wines in their own right.

To celebrate the upcoming spring and the days gett

To celebrate the upcoming spring and the days getting longer, we are offering 10% off all Gut Oggau wines throughout the month of March, for both private customers as well as to those in the trade!

The wines from Stephanie’s and Eduard’s Garden of Eden-like vineyards on the western shores of the Neusiedlersee are tended using more-than-biodynamic practices and horses, which makes them flourish with life. These vineyards produces wines full of energy, joyfulness but also a certain distinct mineral and aromatic complexity not easily matched elsewhere on the lake.

The ‘young’ faces of the family of cuvées are fresh and juicy, with pure floral and fruit aromas, a lot of minerality, and soft textures. The light-orange Theodora, made from Welschriesling and Grüner Veltliner, has a fresh tropical core, the energetic rosé Winifred bursts with cranberries and wild strawberries, and the light-red Atanasius evokes the feeling of a spring forest, with fresh pine needle and cassis notes.

We are also offering discounts on the ‘bigger’ wines from the older vines, such as the lightly macerated, smoky Grüner Veltliner Timotheus, the deep purple, highly elegant Josephine made from Blaufränkisch and the tenturier grape Roesler, the Burgundian Joschuari or the intoxicating yet not heavy Gewürztraminer Emmeram, with its beautiful aromas and complex character.

Lastly, we are also offering discounts on the newest faces of the family, such as the dark rosé Cecilia and the orange Eugenie. These wines come from the most unique vineyards of the Oggaus, planted with PIWI grapes at high density, where trees, other crops, sheep, butterflies, ladybugs, and bees maintain the biodynamic balance.

It’s the Georgian time of year again: the new wines from Georgia arrived late last year, and after 3 months of rest and relaxation, we’re ready to taste them!

On Monday the 17th of March between 12:00 - 17:00, we’ll open +-40 wines by the dozen producers we are working with at Restaurant Choux in Amsterdam. Expect wines from all over Georgia, from the mountainous, volcanic regions to the lush seaside vineyards, by the producers listed below.

Last fall, we received La Rural’s 2023 vintage from southern Catalunya, close to Tarragona, of which the wines are stable, expressive and available as of this month, as the days are getting longer…

One highlight and new addition to the range by Xavi and Andreù is the very affordable Claret, which is a Catalan term for light-reds made from both white and blue grapes. Theirs is mineral-driven, fresh, and spicy, bustling with energy.

The brothers also have a gift for aromatic orange wines, and on the @natur_all_wine fair in France this month, their Moscatell de Alexandria stood out, with bright notes of incense, cardamom, tropical fruit, white peaches, orange zest, and elderflower—a big recommendation!

We also got a few cases of the obscure, lightly smoky orange Vinyater, plus the savory, aromatic Malvasia and zippy Macabeu. Sunshine in a bottle—just what we need right now.

What a weekend it was, touring with our friend Fab

What a weekend it was, touring with our friend Fabio Gea! Thank you all for coming to see Fabio, us (and eventually, Diina!) at Restaurant Lux, Café De Linden and Restaurant Choux over the last few days! The wines were showing great, Fabio spread plenty of wisdom.

Also, to clarify the story of Diina: we all thought we would not ever see Diina, the spiritual mother of Fabio Gea’s porcelain eggs ever again, after her being stolen from a Paris parking lot. However, Diina showed up after being stolen back from the perpetrators on Monday to help convey Fabio’s message during the masterclass held at Restaurant Choux.
