De eerste witte Igavi die wij ooit proefden, en niet zomaar eentje! We werden direct omver geblazen, want de energie spat werkelijk de fles uit. Direct geperste Tsolikouri uit Aidans gaarden in Imereti, gerijpt op Georgisch acaciahout. De druiven staan aangeplant op kalkrijke bodems, waarbij Aidan twee verschillende soorten Tsolikouri in één gaard heeft aangeplant. Deze twee varianten Tsolikouri ('Melqo' en 'Bazaleti') zijn volgens Aidan zeer verschillend en zorgen voor het complexe karakter van deze wijn. Veel witte peper, perzik en rook op de neus, en doet ergens ook denken aan verse patchouli en wierook. Genoeg zuur maar ook voldoende vulling, en tegelijkertijd uniek qua stijl in het Georgische!

Over de wijnmaker
Igavi Wines is het project van de in Nieuw-Zeeland geboren Aidan Raftery. Aidan was in zijn jongere jaren als sommelier actief in zijn geboorteland en uiteindelijk ook in Australië, waar hij de gerenommeerde wijnbar Persillade
oprichtte. In 2013 begon zijn avontuur als wijnmaker, waarbij hij zogeheten garage wines produceerde voor zijn eigen bar.

In 2017 besloot Aidan te stoppen als horeca-ondernemer en startte hij als wijnimporteur, waardoor hij al snel terecht kwam in het geboorteland van wijn, Georgië. Tijdens deze wijnreis werd hij verliefd, zowel op Georgië als wijnland maar ook op zijn huidige vrouw, Ellie Bukhaidze. Het duurde niet lang voordat Aidan naar Georgië verhuisde om zijn wijnmaakdroom te verwezenlijken, waarbij hij een huis (mét wijngaard!) kocht in het dorpje Zeindari in Imereti.

Over de naam van zijn project hoefde Aidan niet lang na te denken. Hij hoorde ooit een volksverhaal - vrij vertaald igavi - over Georgische soldaten die een druiventwijg uit hun familiegaard meenamen naar het front, zodat er een wijngaard zou ontspringen wanneer ze zouden sterven. Igavi Wines is dan ook een eerbetoon aan de Georgische traditie en cultuur, waarbij de lokale en inheemse druivenrassen centraal staan.

Over de wijngaard
De gaarden van Igavi Wines bevinden zich op twee verschillende plekken: enerzijds in Imereti, anderzijnds in Lechkhumi. Het Imeretiaanse klimaat kan als subtropisch beschreven worden, met natte, warme zomers. Lechkhumi ligt echter een stuk noordelijker en meer richting het Caucasusgebergte, met warme dagen maar koele nachten.

De stokken zijn op beide locaties tussen de 20 en 120 jaar oud en de focus ligt vooral op inheemse en vergeten druivenrassen als Vanis Chkhaveri, Mgaloblishvili, Tsolikouri en Orbeluri Ojaleshi.

Over de wijnen
Alle wijnen worden gemaakt in Aidans kelder in Zeindari, waarbij het wit gemaakt wordt in Georgisch acaciahout en het rood in qvevri. De stijl van Igavi kan worden omschreven als elegant, zeer puur en energiek, waarbij het wit voornamelijk direct geperst wordt en het rood korte maceratie krijgt. De wijnen zijn te allen tijden ongezwaveld, wat de energie zeker ten goede komt. Over het algemeen rijpen alle wijnen minstens een jaar, op hun eigen gisten, waardoor ze volwassen doch knallend uit de fles komen.

About the winemaker
Igavi Wines is the project of New Zealand–born Aidan Raftery. In his early years, Aidan worked as a sommelier in his home country and later in Australia, where he founded the renowned wine bar Persillade. In 2013, his journey as a winemaker began, producing so-called “garage wines” for his own bar.

In 2017, Aidan decided to step away from hospitality and started working as a wine importer, which soon led him to the birthplace of wine: Georgia. During this journey, he fell in love—not only with Georgia as a wine country, but also with his future wife, Ellie Bukhaidze. It wasn’t long before Aidan moved to Georgia to pursue his winemaking dream, purchasing a house (complete with vineyard, of course) in the village of Zeindari in Imereti.

Choosing the name of his project came naturally. Aidan once heard a folk tale—loosely translated as igavi—about Georgian soldiers who carried a vine cutting from their family vineyard to the battlefield, so that a vineyard would grow where they fell. Igavi Wines is therefore a tribute to Georgian tradition and culture, with a strong focus on local and indigenous grape varieties.

About the vineyard
The vineyards of Igavi Wines are located in two distinct regions: Imereti and Lechkhumi. Imereti has a subtropical climate, characterised by warm, wet summers. Lechkhumi lies further north, closer to the Caucasus Mountains, with warm days and cool nights.

In both locations, the vines range from 20 to 120 years old, with a strong emphasis on indigenous and lesser-known grape varieties such as Vanis Chkhaveri, Mgaloblishvili, Tsolikouri and Orbeluri Ojaleshi.

About the wines
All wines are made in Aidan’s cellar in Zeindari, where the whites are made in Georgian acacia barrels and the reds in qvevri. The style of Igavi Wines can be described as elegant, highly pure and energetic. White wines are mostly direct-pressed, while the reds undergo relatively short macerations. The wines are always made without added sulphur, enhancing their vibrancy and sense of life. In general, all wines mature for at least a year on their own native yeasts, resulting in wines that are calm yet bursting with energy. We are therefore delighted to welcome these wines to the Netherlands.
