About the winemaker
Giglio is a small island just off the coast of Tuscany, once blanketed with vineyards that, over time, were largely abandoned and reclaimed by nature. Francesco Carfagna had been escaping the bustle of Rome for Giglio since the 1980s, and before long, he opened a restaurant there where he began serving ‘living wines’. By the late 1990s, Francesco decided to buy several overgrown parcels, determined to continue Giglio’s winemaking heritage with a clear focus on the island’s native grape: Ansonaco (known as Ansonica on the Tuscan mainland, Ansonaco on Giglio itself). Francesco emerged as a champion of Ansonaco, inspiring other artisan winemakers on the island to follow his lead over time.

About the vineyard
When Francesco found the vineyards in 1999, he also replanted some new vines among the old. His winegrowing revolves around Ansonaco, which he crafts into a pure orange wine; he also grows Sangiovese for a traditionally deep-toned rosé. In addition, there’s a small plot where some twenty indigenous and almost forgotten grape varieties are interplanted these find their way into his flagship red, the Rosso Saverio. None of the vineyards are accessible by machine the steep slopes allow only handwork, and every aspect of tending the vines is done manually. This is a true small-scale winery rooted in organic vineyards, dedicated to low-intervention and sustainable viticulture practices on the rugged coast of Tuscany.

About the wines
The wines are unmistakably Italian, yet each one carries a vibrant freshness, shaped by the strong, salty winds that sweep across the island’s cliffs.
