Over de wijnmaker
De voorouders van de familie Šuman waren enthousiaste wijnbouwers, wat maakt dat de kennis en liefde voor wijn terug gaat tot in de 14e eeuw. De liefde voor natuur draagt zich tegenwoordig nog steeds uit in alle aspecten van het domein; de wijngaarden staan open voor alle vormen van leven en er wordt erop vertrouwd dat de natuur de juiste weg zal kiezen, waarin de familie Šuman, met Radovan aan het hoofd, luistert naar de behoeften van de natuur, en de natuur begeleidt waar nodig.

Over de wijngaard
Radovan Šuman heeft zichzelf wijn maken geleerd, en maakt nu wijnen in de heuvels van Sloveens Steiermark (net over de grens met Oostenrijk, op een kleine afstand van de Musters en Tscheppes). De wijngaarden zijn vol leven, net als de druiven, waarvan de essentie in de wijnen tot zijn recht komt. Rudolf Steiner’s principes worden tot in de kleinste details toegepast, en Šuman is een radicale non-interventionist; er wordt niet geploegd, niet gesprayd en er wordt nóóít iets toegevoegd aan de wijnen. In alle aspecten van maken van wijn worden uitsluitend vertrouwd op de eigen kracht en energie van de natuur om bij te dragen aan de levendigheid die zich rondom het domein afspeelt.

Over de wijnen
De wijnen staan bol van energie, wat tot uitdrukking komt in de volle body’s, sterke karakters, rijke boeketten en warme kleuren. Voor elke wijn worden de druiven gemacereerd op de manier die bij die specifieke wijn past, om alles eruit te halen wat de druiven kunnen geven. Alle wijn wordt gerijpt in oude Elzasser foudres, en zijn strikt natuurlijk. Zo is ‘Moon Drops’ een assemblage van 12 druivenrassen met een korte maceratie, die vóór het bottelen in kleien kruiken twee jaar in de oude foudres rijpt.

About the winemaker
The Šuman family’s connection to winegrowing reaches deep into the past their ancestors were devoted vine growers, with a lineage of knowledge and passion that stretches back to the 14th century. Today, their reverence for nature is woven into every aspect of this Slovenian natural wine producer. The Šuman vineyards are open to all forms of life, with a profound trust that nature itself will choose the right path. At the helm, Radovan Šuman listens quietly to the needs of the land, guiding only when necessary, and ensuring that the rhythms of the ecosystem remain undisturbed. This is truly an artisan, family-run vineyard, where nature’s wisdom provides both direction and inspiration.

About the vineyard
Radovan Šuman is entirely self-taught, crafting his wines amid the rolling hills of Slovenian Styria just across the border from Austria and not far from the famed Musters and Tscheppes. Life abounds among his organic vineyards in Slovenska Štajerska; you feel it in the air and taste it in the grapes, whose vitality is unmistakably captured in every bottle. Biodynamic winemaking here is rooted in Rudolf Steiner’s principles; they are taken seriously, down to the smallest detail. Šuman is a radical low-intervention producer: no ploughing, no spraying, and absolutely nothing is ever added to the wine. Every step is grounded in the strength and natural energy that abound in and around the estate. This is sustainable viticulture in its most uncompromising form.

About the wines
These are wines alive with energy full-bodied, vibrant, intensely aromatic, and striking in their colour and depth. For each cuvée, the grapes are macerated according to what suits that particular expression best, coaxing out every nuance the fruit can offer. All wines are aged in old Alsatian foudres, and the results are strictly natural true to the estate’s uncompromising standards. An example is ‘Moon Drops’, a blend of twelve grape varieties given only a short maceration, then matured for two years in the historic foudres before being finished in clay vessels just before bottling.
