New Wine Season is upon us, and we’re delighted

New Wine Season is upon us, and we’re delighted to kick-off with some superbe arrivals by Lori Haon of Domaine du Petit Oratoire from the Gard, west of Tavel.

Lori has been making wine since 2016 with the aim of making digestible wines, both in- and outside the Côtes du Rhône and Tavel AOCs, and he is part of the new natural wave in the region. With climate change, lots of the Southern Rhône-natural reds, whites and even the Tavel(-inspired) rosés are reaching monstrous alcohol- and flab-levels, but by sensitive and sensible wine making, Lori is able to retain tension, poise, and fresh aromatics across the range. The high quality of the wines is even more striking considering the honest pricing, both by itself and in comparison to other output in the region...

In addition to a new thirst-quenching macerated Grenache Blanc and a sapid Poulsard-colored blend, both from vines in Souvignargues, Lori unearthed two fantastic 2021s from 100+ year old bush vines. Both Suzette and Flaux have depth, but are light and delicate and lots of fun at the same time. We couldn’t stop smiling after tasting these wines. Wonderful stuff!

Gaumarjos!! After months of delay, we can finally announce that the yearly Georgian transport has arrived!

This year we can proudly present 13(!) producers from different regions around Georgia. Next to the mesmerizing wines of Ramaz Nikoladze, Archil & Mariam Guniava, Keto & Gogita (Makaridze), Enek Petersson (Freya’s Marani), Marina & Iago, Tamuna, Ketevan, Juniors Marani and John & Gela (Pheasant’s Tears), we were able to add Andrias Gvino and Manavi Wines to our portfolio.

To present these winemakers and their new vintages, we’ll organise a professional tasting for our clients on Monday the 25th of March, between 13h and 17h at Restaurant Choux. We’ll open around 50 bottles from the kaleidoscopic range of the beauty Georgia has to offer.

Finally, the new wines by Slobodné have landed! W

Finally, the new wines by Slobodné have landed! We visited their beautiful farm last October, where we learned lots about Slovak history and the workings of (agricultural) society during and after the Soviet era.

Although the vineyards and the cellars have been around for a long time, the winemaking style at Slobodné embodies the new Slovakian natural wine wave. By making use of ovoid fermenters, tinajas, and maceration on the aromatic white grapes of the region, the wines are immensely expressive and have enormous amplitude, whilst being mineral-driven and highly refreshing.

Lots of wines are back in stock, like Majer Blanc, Vronski, Veltlina, the new vintage of fan-favorite Oranžista, herbal Supermajer, orange Riesling Eggstasy as well as the all-round Central-Europe red, Majer Rouge!

The 2022s by Pequeños y Salvajes are very welcome

The 2022s by Pequeños y Salvajes are very welcome rays of sunlight this winter, and we are happy to be able to share them now!

The new wines by Vicky and Nahuel of P&S mainly come from their old vines planted south of the city of Ávila in the rocky hills of the Sierra de Gredos, with some of the vines dating back to the (pre-)Franco era. Vicky and Nahuel use biodynamic principles for farming their beautiful high-altitude vineyards, and work strictly zero-zero in their cellar. The wines, raised in tinaja and old barrels, are super expressive, dynamic and low in alcohol, but are also solid, like the rocky soils they come from.

Besides tropical pét nats, a colorful range of lighter to more dense orange wines from Moscatel, Albillo, Chasselas Dorée and Chelva - some aged under flor -, there’s a magical light red made of Tempranillo and whole bunches of white Albillo, which feels like an 11% wine made of ‘Gris’ grapes on a Georgian frame, but is quintessentially Pequeños y Salvajes and does taste like the Sierra de Gredos. Fantastic stuff!

Last week, we toured NL with Michael of 2Naturkind

Last week, we toured NL with Michael of 2Naturkinder, and we had a blast!

We started off with an insightful and attentive tasting at one of the most emblematic restaurants of Maastricht, Café Sjiek, an absolute institution, with 40+ years of Limburg hospitality under their belt.

The next morning, we headed off to Nevel, where Mattias and Rob showed us around the brewery, tasting the still beers from barrel, where we reconfirmed the amazing quality of the beers, and learned how to open and close a barrel using a nail. After, we had a fun quick tasting at one of the most progressive restaurants in NL and Europe, namely De Nieuwe Winkel. We ended the day at our friends of Pizzacafé DESEM, where we did another open tasting, had amazing dishes, pizzas and a bunch of good laughs.

On Wednesday, we first visited Restaurant De Dyck in Woubrugge, where they’re almost fully self-sustainable by farming 5000 m2 of vegetable, herb and fruit gardens, and are raising pigs, and are preservering their harvest-season bounties by means of fermentation, pickling, curing and smoking. We finished off the day with a bike-and-ferry Amsterdam tour, visiting clients and having more laughs.

All in all, we were grateful for having Michael over, and want to thank everyone who hosted us, attended the tastings and posed great questions, fed and watered us, and had fun with us!

As is tradition, we visited 10+ wine fairs in Loir

As is tradition, we visited 10+ wine fairs in Loire during the first weekend of February, and met 40+ Zuiver wine producers, which is always a highlight during these dark months! We tasted the new vintages, spoke about the 2023 vintage as well as the upcoming one, and had super insightful talks about the future of sustainable agriculture and natural winemaking.

Above, a small selection of the amazing people we saw during the busy weekend. A huge thanks goes out to all of the people who put in the work day in day out to produce wines which bring us joy!

We have been working with young talent Thibaud Cap

We have been working with young talent Thibaud Capellaro for a number of vintages already, but since the allocations of his dynamic yet elegant zéro-zéro Northern Rhône wines were small, there never really was any stock. However, as the wines of Thibaud embody the true natural Northern Rhône, made famous by winemakers like Dard & Ribo, Thierry Allemand and Hervé Souhaut, we decided to age three 2021 cuvées for a year ourselves, which are ready for release now.

Pierre Taillée 2021 is made of 95% Syrah with 5% Viognier from own vines planted in appellation Saint-Joseph, and really has a Saint-Joseph-feel to it, with violets, fresh herbs, olives, saltiness, smoke and dark fruit, a bright lift and fresh acidity. Terra 2021, 100% Syrah -recognizably so-, is somewhat more earthy, but with not too much extraction and no additives, it feels very pre-Parker-esque. Lastly, La Canuse 2021, is made by pressing 95% of Viognier through the basket-press cake of his Côte-Rotie Syrah-skins, creating a beautiful ‘reverse Côte-Rotie’ dark rosé. Truly genius wines.

Besides these three 2021s, the deliciously aromatic and complex orange cuvée Le Temps d’une Bise, the rustic, high-energy Syrah-Viognier-blend Zé-Ro and the floral, light red Ombre & Lumière made in collaboration with colleague Etienne Seignovert are available as 2022s.
